Ways with Words - March

I'll be talking about Dickens and how I came to write The Invisible Woman at Keswick - Ways with Words - at 6 p.m. on Saturday 6 March.   There will also be a showing of the film of The Invisible Woman.

Sydney Festival - May

In May I'll be talking at the Sydney Festival in Australia on 21 and 22 May, on Dickens and on Biography - and also in Melbourne on 14 May.

Chalke Valley History Festival - June

Penguin Chalke Valley History Prize

I'll be judging this year's award with internationally best-selling author, Sebastian Faulks, acclaimed actor, Haydn Gwynne, and comedian and best-selling novelist, Charlie Higson.

There are two age groups, 11-14 and 15-18, and entrants are asked to write a first chapter of a historical novel of no more than 1,500 words, and a brief outline of the rest of the proposed novel of up to 500 words. Entries must be submitted by 12.00 noon B.S.T on Friday 29th May 2015.

The prizes are £500 to the winner of each category, £500 to the winners’ schools, £100 of Penguin Books, and a one-to-one session with a senior publisher at Penguin.
